Fishing tournament breaks record...again

Four hundred sixty-six fishermen entered the surf
fishing competition hosted by Fish Across Texas and
Kampgrounds of America (KOA) Saturday afternoon.
The group already held a listing as the largest surf
fishing tournament in the world in the Guinness Book of
World Records for last year’s contest, in which 417
fishermen competed.
A couple of dozen people were still standing in line
shortly after 2:00 p.m. to weigh in their catches.
The biggest fish caught lay off to one side. It was a
black tip shark about four feet in length, weighing 92
pounds, caught by Fred Calderas of Zapata. His fishing
buddy, Chris Lara, came from Corpus Christi for the
event.
Calderas said he caught the shark “about five to
seven miles up the beach. I don’t know exactly, because
my odometer doesn’t work.”
A large commercial trash bin was rapidly filling up
as fishermen brought back plastic bags full of garbage
from the beach. By the end of the day it was filled to
overflowing, Danno Wise reported. “We won’t know how
much it is until they weigh it Monday,” he said, “but I
can tell by looking it’s a lot more than last year.”
