Plenty of trout
are being caught on live shrimp out of the
Intracoastal Waterway right now. You just have to keep
moving until you find the fish. The most common
technique when fishing the ICW is to anchor down
outside of the cuts that go through the spoils and
freeline live shrimp where the cut empties into the
ICW, if the current isn’t too strong. If the current
is too strong, you might have to put on a small clamp
weight or two and fish the current as if it were a
river, throwing up current and let the bait move back
down along the channel edges.
The flats are
holding reds, but you have to find them. The beach has
been kind of rough, but a few anglers toughed it out
and caught whiting, pompano, and small drum.
One rule of
thumb this week to think about is: Don’t leave fish to
find fish. If you know that there are fish in the
area, tough it out until the bite is on. This can be
difficult and requires a bit of discipline.
If you would
like to try something different, have your catch
cooked Veracruz style at Daddy’s Restaurant. It is a
stir fry type of dish served with rice. They also have
great Cajun cuisine. If you’re a fan of gumbo, you
must try the Jumbo Gumbo.
This is a good
time to get out on the water, so get out there or call
a guide. Hiring a guide, for a small fee, is a smart
move if you really want to get out there and catch
fish.
Until next
week,
Captain Kevin
Pirkle
