Happy New Year!
Welcome to South Padre Island’s Fishing Report. Here
we’ll learn more about what’s going on in the water
and on the land from a locals’ perspective.
I am owner and
operator of Pirkle Bay Charters here on the Island. I
will keep you up to date on where I’ve been and how
I’ve done fishing at different locations, not limited
to the bay. We’ll cover the jetties and the surf.
We’ll also cover the restaurants that will cook your
catch, and in the unfortunate event of not having a
catch to cook, the restaurants that will be great
places to eat and hang out at.
Right now the
east side is full of reds. The reds are hitting Gulp
Shrimp in all colors that I’ve thrown at them. In the
Intracoastal around the three island area, limits of
trout have been taken by free lining live shrimp.
Drove to the
Mansfield jetties on Saturday and Winter Texans were
loading up on whiting and pompano all the way up the
beach. At the jetties, only a few anglers had landed
some black drum. I’ve heard reports of some flounder
being caught at the jetties here in town.
If you’ve been
thinking about hiring a guide, now is a good time, as
the fishing is good, and you can get an off season
rate with most of the guides.
We took a mess
of fish to The Palm Street Pier Bar and Grill and had
them blackened. They do an excellent job and the
ambiance of the restaurant is wonderful. Come as you
are. They have a lunch special everyday, and the
Monday meatloaf really might be as they claim: as good
as grandmas.
